Carbs are often considered as the biggest enemy. When it comes to weight loss or spiked insulin levels, for most of the people eliminating carbs is the easiest thing to do. Low carb diets are basically yanking carbs from your diet but carbs shouldn’t be avoided, in fact eating carbs is important in maintaining energy and to get proper nutrition.

Low carb diets gained popularity as it clearly works pretty well for some people but this low carb diet movement has taken a hit because this diet promised quick and long-lasting weight loss and prevention of chronic disease which hasn’t been all that effective and is proven to be less healthy than originally claimed. A low-carb diet is also associated with kidney stones usually due to a high protein intake for a long period of time coupled with inadequate fluid intake.

Everyone requires some level of carbohydrates to function properly and be able to carry out daily activities. Sure, we can cut some carbohydrates temporarily if we need to lose weight quickly. But for most of us, keeping carbs too low for too long can have major repercussions. So the only key is  to control and modify the type of carbs you eat to maintain your health and body weight. Refined carbs such as sweets, pasta, white bread contain simple sugars and have low nutritional value. These carbohydrates can lead to fluctuating blood sugar levels, energy and contribute to weight gain. Complex carbs pack more nutrition including fiber, vitamins, and minerals. They are absorbed slowly and provide a good source of sustained energy like vegetables, whole grains, and fresh fruit.
