Bisi Bele Bath

Bisi Bele Bath in kannada means hot lentil rice. This delicious and healthy main course meal is prepared from rice, lentils and vegetables and is one of the most popular recipes of Karnataka cuisine. This one pot dish is extremely delicious as a unique flavor is given to the recipe by the use of tamarind and sambar powder.

Nutritional Benefits

Rice is a great source of carbohydrate and acts as a great source of fuel to the body. It also serves as a good source of B vitamins, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, fiber, and iron. Toor Dal is a great source of folic acid and also rich in proteins and dietary fiber. Mixed Vegetables added in the recipe is an important source of many nutrients, like potassium, dietary fiber, folic acid, vitamin A, and vitamin C.


  • Rice – 10 g
  • Toor dal- 15 g
  • Radish -10 g
  • Carrot – 5 g
  • Peas – 5 g
  • Sweet Potato – 5 g
  • Turmeric – 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt – according to taste
  • Sambar Powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Jaggery – 1.4 teaspoon
  • Onion – 10 g (chopped)
  • Tamarind water – ¼ cup
  • Water – 2 cups
  • Cilantro – 1 teaspoon
  • For Tempering
  • Ghee – 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Methi seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – 4-5

  • Wash thoroughly rice and water and soak in water for about an hour.
  • Add the chopped vegetables, onion, soaked rice, toor dal, turmeric powder, sambar powder, jaggery, salt, water, tamarind water, to the pressure cooker.
  • Cook the ingredients of the pressure cooker for up to 4-5 whistles and once the pressure are released;give a quick mix to the rice nicely.
  • In a separate pan, heat the ghee and once the ghee is melted and hot, add mustard seeds, methi seeds and curry leaves to it.
  • Once the seeds start to splutter, add it to the rice and give it a mix. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve.
