Hara Bhara Dhokla

You don’t have to be a Gujarati to relish this delicious fermented dhokla. Slated as the yummiest of all fermented foods, here’s an easy recipe for Hara Bhara Dhokla that’s not only delicious but also has a gamut of nutritional benefits. It’s light on your stomach and great for digestion. It is highly nutritious & helps to lower cholesterol while being excellent for diabetic patients as it is loaded with fiber. It also contains spinach which is rich in folate, vitamin A, calcium, magnesium, potassium and curd all of which are beneficial for digestion.

Let’s get cooking, shall we?


  • 60g of spinach
  • 50g of curd
  • 30g of Bengal gram dal
  • A pinch of Asafoetida
  • 1 teaspoon of lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon of oil
  • 2 long green chilli
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

Preparation time: 4-6 hours

Cooking time: 30 minutes

Serving: 1

Calories: 202-205 kcal


  • Soak dal for four to six hours and grind it with curd .
  • Transfer it into a deep bowl. Add green chillies, spinach puree, salt, asafoetida, lemon juice, oil and add to the batter and mix it.
  • Grease dhokla plates with oil. Heat sufficient water in the steamer pot. Pour the batter into the dhokla plates, fit them on the stand and place the stand in the steamer. Close the lid and steam for fifteen minutes or till done.
  • Take a saucepan, pour oil into it, add black mustard seed and green chilli for garnishing.
